Initiatives and Products: Bringing Recycling to Strata

This post is based on the full article which can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/fxfncnkr

In WA, recycling in strata communities has become a crucial focus. Back in 2018-2019, a staggering 85% of plastics in Australia ended up in landfills, with only 5.6% being recycled in WA. The global recycling landscape was further disrupted when China stopped importing post-consumer plastics in 2017.

Australia responded with the Recycling and Waste Reduction Bill in 2020 and the Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) to enhance local waste processing. These measures aim to turn recycling challenges into opportunities.

Tips for Strata Communities

  1. Simplify Recycling for Residents: Provide clear signage and induction programs for new residents.

  2. Improve Bin Rooms: Ensure good lighting, ventilation, and an easy-to-clean setup.

  3. Utilise Council Services: Take advantage of local council resources, like bin assessments and multilingual signs.

  4. Support Apartment Recycling: Offer two-bin systems or recycling baskets for residents.

  5. Maintain Waste Infrastructure: Keep bin areas clean, well-lit, and odour-free to encourage proper use.

  6. Explore Doorstep and Drop-off Services: Utilise services for tricky waste items like electronics and textiles.

Containers for Change

This program incentivises recycling of beverage containers with a refund for each returned container. The Containers for Change Collect service makes it easy for various establishments to participate.

Implementing Recycling

  1. Educate Residents: Share information on the benefits of separating organic waste.

  2. Provide Resources: Ensure access to appropriate bins and composting facilities. Explore free resources from Containers for Change here.

  3. Encourage Participation: Use incentives and regular reminders to maintain high engagement.
